FICA Oakland Code of Ethics

FICA Oakland is dedicated to the study and preservation of the values of the Afro-Brazilian art form of Capoeira Angola. We seek to build community together with our West Oakland neighbors and our camaradas in Capoeira; to move in the spirit of resistance and liberation at the center of Capoeira Angola.

We commit to:
  • Treating each and every individual with respect;
  • Renouncing the use of racist, xenophobic, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ageist, ableist, and any other discriminatory or abusive behavior or language;
  • Using preferred gender pronouns and holding space for all gender identities;
  • Respecting physical bodies and creating and upholding a culture of bodily autonomy, accessibility, boundaries, and consent;
  • Prioritizing physical, emotional and social safety and avoiding injury or other physical harm to ourselves and others while training;
  • Not tolerating threats and acts of violence;
  • Maintaining and respecting the space, which includes cleaning up after ourselves and respecting others’ belongings;
  • The maintenance of a safe and welcoming space for members of the community in which we live, especially women and children.
  • Committing to the collective care of children when in this space.
  • We will investigate and ensure accountability for all allegations of inappropriate behavior.

*By participating in FICA Oakland events and activities, you pledge to uphold this code of ethics
